Chorizo Funk

This Saturday I’ll be competing in the Austin Qualifier for the Red Bull Three Style competition. It’s an honor to be selected as one of eight Austin dj’s and have a chance to spread some chorizo funk on the unexpected crowd! This is a competition to see who can rock the party the best with one requirement: you must play at least three different genres of music in one 15 minute set.

In addition to all the competitors’ sets, there will be a headlining set by the former DMC champ and top notch party rocker, DJ Klever.

Big Body Soul. If I had a throwback Lincoln or Cadillac, I’d be riding to soul music, and the new Lee Fields would definitely be in rotation. The great Oliver Wang did a piece on Lee Fields a couple years ago where he does a great job of putting Lee’s 40 year career in context (available here). He and the Expressions have a new album out on Truth & Soul records and a handful of 45′s as well that I highly recommend.

So here it is Chorizo Chunks 12! This was recorded live at Body Rock in December 2011. We decided to commemorate the recent loss of Heavy D (May 24, 1967 – November 8, 2011) with a New Jack Swing themed night.

One of my favorite parts of the live mixes from Body Rock is the energy that is captured from the night. Not only do you hear the fam, Riders Against the Storm, on the mic hosting and hyping the party, BUT you can also hear the crowd response.

The people make the party…if they don’t feel inspired to bug out and get stupid, it’s just another night at any club downtown. The dance floor was rocking non-stop so I was able to dig a little deeper and play some less popular New Jack Swing tracks, but I definitely played all the favorites.

The peak for me was when the needle started to skip from people dancing. Unfortunately it messed up my mix….but you can’t be mad at that. Free DL from the player below. Spread the Love!

It ain’t Cinco de Mayo in Austin if you can’t get some Chorizo Funk!! This Saturday celebrate, I mean get stoopid, on Cinco de Mayo with us.

It’s been about a year since I last played along w/Peligrosa, so this line-up isn’t some every weekend type ish! In addition, it’s been a couple of months since I last got down with a cumbia/Afro-Latin set, so I’m really hyped!! I’ll be serving some dirty nasty güiro to celebrate Mexican Independence, Battle of Puebla, Pancho Villa, tequila, tecate, sawlsa……forget it. ¡A Pistear! FB

We’re back in action for you this month at Body Rock!! We are gonna kick off the summer heat wave this Friday with guest DJ Orión!! Events, posts, and djing have been quite slow for me the last month and a half due to the fact that I broke my wrist during SXSW (It’s a full contact sport out there, be safe kids).

In my down time I swung by the homie DJ Orión’s saturday night residency at Volstead to catch his set before he embarked on his European tour. The man is always grinding and continues to put Austin on the map with the long standing Peligrosa monthly party (via himself and the rest of the Peligrosa All Stars). I really enjoyed his set, and based on the fact that he probably made over two-hundred dollars in tips that night I wasn’t the only one. Dude had so many Andrew Jacksons thrown at the turntables that I lost count!

This weekend BBoy City 19 is set to go down here in Austin TX, and you are sure to catch me there. This year’s festivities, competition, and cyphers promise to be top notch, with an emphasis on the original foundation. We are lucky to have Ken Swift & Clarky taking part in the festivities! On Friday night at the Highball we’ll get the weekend started with the Romeo Navarro Urban International Short Film Festival: “SHOOT TO LIVE” from 7-10:30 pm. For a full list of films and details check the FB event HERE.

The competition will be at the Montopolis Rec this year, so there will be plenty of space for everybody. I’ll be sharing the turntables with the mighty DJ Element from Phoenix/Furious Styles Crew/Armory Massive, and the homie DJ Silent Rob. Full details HERE. It feels like a long five weeks since we last got down at Body Rock, but no worries it’s going down tonight! The Chief Rocker DJ Baby G will be on deck at Body Rock tonight!

DJ Baby G & Mel are my two biggest influences that astounded me with their mixing, crowd control, and consistency. I didn’t hear many DJ’s, if any growing up, so the bubbling scene of Austin Hip Hop in the late 90′s was my first experience. I specifically remember getting lost in wonder as I heard them effortlessly blend records (pre-serato…they were using actual records) and the crowd at Nasty’s loving every minute of it!

Those first experiences have always stuck w/me and shaped my approach to djing….and I hope they always do! Last night I came across this live mix of Baby G & Nick Nack doing a live 2×4 set at Rootdown in Austin (circa 2002), and it was a shining example of Austin DJ culture in the early 2000′s. You would be hard pressed to find dj’s in Austin in 2012 with this level of execution. Great scratching, mixing, and doubles with a focus on a steady beat for the dancefloor. You can also hear a couple of live blends (a.k.a mashups) executed live and this was all done with actual records…..

In 2012, the caliber of the DJ scene in Austin has dropped, but at Body Rock we strive to keep the quality high & the dance floor packed, which is why I feel that having Baby G at Body Rock will be a perfect match. This Saturday Bavu Blakes (superior MC/Wordsmith/Journalist/video producer in the making) will be performing his new SANCT EP along with Body Rock, B.L.A.X.Smith, Digg (Table Manners Crew) and Riders against the Storm. A full line-up smack dab in the middle of Texas Relays….We’re gonna give’em a RUN for their money (pardon the poor pun).

The EP is produced by Reggie Coby (LoegZ) and sounds exceptional! Bavu started a kickstarter campaign to back the production of the EP and give supporters an opportunity to make the music come to life. Hot damn here we go again!! I’ll be back on deck tonight with some of the best dj’s from across the country, and we’ll only be playing 7 inch 45 vinyl records! I love the digital world, but as a music lover and purveyor of DJ culture there is nothing like playing tiny records with fat grooves that you have collected throughout the years. No smoke and mirrors for this one. Tonight at Hudson on 5th (5th street & Lavaca) in downtown Austin. No Cover.
