Excited to share Volume 2 in the Clásico mix series today. I have quite a bit of mixes online, but this one definitely stands out because it’s a live recording of Rudy Rexx accompanying me and playing live percussion.
The collaborative set between Rudy Rexx and myself was the inspiration for the first Clásico mix. However I made the previous volume without his musical contribution. At the moment we had barely begun to perform together as Clásico, so the mix served as an introduction to the music that we wanted to play.
Fast forward to April 2013, and we’ve had a couple of months playing together and you get this live recording from our April set. This evening I decided to play more Brazilian music along with the usual mix of Salsa, Cumbia, and other styles of Afro-Latin music.
Rudy and Myself will be playing live this Saturday at Austin Vida’s monthly Barrio Bash party. More info & details on how you can win tix to Pachanga fest here.

Live percussion + live turntables on a heavy Afro-Latin vibe is the Clásico sound, and this Saturday Rudy Rexx & myself will be performing at Austin Vida’s Barrio Bash at the Spiderhouse Ballroom.
Barrio Bash is Austin Vida’s monthly party with a full line up of local Latin acts and DJ’s. We’ll be playing the outside stage 8-10pm. more info -> FB || Do512

The homie DJ Chicken George and myself teamed up for an all vinyl mix to commemorate Record Store Day this past weekend. I decided on using all 45′s on this project, many of which were recent additions spanning a variety of genres.
Some of my personal highlights from the mix include:
- Sunny: Hands down ,one of my all time favorite compositions! I included the original along w/a cover by Les McCann.
- It’s Your World: Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson are one of my favorite musical pairs….EVER! So much soul!
- After Laughter Comes Tears: Combine Wendy Rene’s heart wrenching performance along with the Stax house band (I believe it’s Booker T. & the M.G.’s) and you get one of the most ubiquitous Hip Hop samples.
I definitely look forward to teaming up with CG again for next year’s mix. In the meantime, here’s this year’s version below. Free DL and track listing on Soundcloud.

Alotta DJing going on this weekend, and it’s all happening in Houston TX! This Friday and Saturday I’m sharing DJ duties with Lean Rock for the Redbull BC One Houston Cypher. Full details on the FB.
This Sunday, I’m also excited to play the Bombón stage at the 43rd annual Houston International Festival. I’m looking forward to linking up w/the Bombón crew, and putting together a nice set of Afro-Latin goodness. More info on FB.

Before I knew who Don Blackman was, I fell in love with his music. A few producers and DJ’s utilized some of his licks from his rare debut LP, and I have never forgotten those songs and the first few listens. It was only later that I learned more about the man behind the music. Don Blackman (September 1, 1953 – April 11, 2013) grew up in Jamaica Queens New York, the home of highly respected musicians such as Marcus Miller, Weldon Irvine, Tom Browne, Lenny White, and Bernard Wright, they all knew each other and collaborated on numerous seminal albums in the late 70′s & early 80′s.Don and his fellow Queens-based contemporaries made some of the smoothest yet funky music ever laid to wax. Their sound had a raw and funky groove, but still soulful and smooth with amazing melodies, harmonies, and musicianship (Jazz music was a huge influence in this camp). Think Roy Ayers meets Parliament meets Bernie Worrell meets 70′s love meets New York City.
I’m just trying to bring out the love and positive thinking and positive vibe.

This weekend I’ll be back in the mix at some proper gatherings with some of my local favorites, out of town guests, and the livest party people in Austin!
This Friday, Body Rock is back at the Sahara Lounge! We took March off, to let the huge storm that is SXSW pass, and now we’re back on our regularly scheduled program of hosting Austin’s best dancers. This month it’s our pleasure to welcome back guest DJ Orión! The man can do it all: DJ, designer, promoter, VJ, photographer, welder, and cat psychic…just to name a few, but Friday night he’ll be on the turntables bringing a heavy dose of Colombia, Africa, and original productions. On Sunday I’ll be part of the Austin leg of Uproot Andy’s (Que Bajo?!/NYC) Texas tour at Mohawk. Uproot Andy is resident DJ and producer at Que Bajo, New York’s #1 tropical bass party. The man has some of my favorite tropical flavored productions and I’m sure he’ll have some unreleased music that you will only hear at Mohawk on Sunday. In addition you’ll get DJ Orión, myself, and Kiko Villamizar…..Afro-Latin/Nu Cumbia/etc/etc. FB event

DJ Day is hands down one of my favorite DJ’s and producers, and luckily for the world he has a new release, Land of 1000 Chances via Piecelock 70 records.
On his recent promotional push through Europe, DJ Day stopped by the Brownswood studio for Giles Peterson’s WorldWide show (IMO one of the best radio shows in the world) for an interview and dropped off one hell of a guest mix which you can find here.
Below is the stunning video of Land of 1,000 Chances, a beautifully shot journey through San Francisco, which definitely has me feeling nostalgic and itching to return.
